Migrants’ Rights Scotland with Migrant Voice and the support of Christina McKelvie MSP joined with migrants from across Scotland to commemorate International Migrants Day, OUR DAY 2013, on 17 December.
It was an opportunity for all to share knowledge and experience about migrants’ significant contribution to the nation and to discuss how rights-based immigration policy can bring added benefits to Scotland and the UK. The Scottish Government’s Minister for External Affairs, Humza Yousaf, attended the full meeting and listened to a cross-sector range of views on the impact of recent immigration policy in Scotland. He also heard clear suggestions from attendees on the possible ways forward to achieve fair and humane policies for migrants here.
Listen to the audio recording of the evening’s discussion which brought forward some frank and honest views about how a “toxic” public issue can be handled differently. As Twimukye Mushaka, one of the panellists, stated: “Migrants are part of the solution.”
