OUR DAY: International Migrants Day – December 18

18 December is International Migrants Day. This is a day identified by the United Nations to recognise and respect the fundamental rights and freedoms of all migrants. It is also the day when, in 2000, the UN General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families. International Migrants Day is currently celebrated by some groups in the UK and beyond, but is not marked by most people.

Last December, Migrants’ Rights Scotland was one of the few to mark the day. We celebrated the lives, achievements, courage and resilience of people who live across and beyond borders with an evening of film and friendship in Glasgow. More about that event here.

This year, we will link with other like-minded groups to make an even bigger impact across Scotland and the United Kingdom. We want to build greater awareness and understanding of International Migrants Day and the related UN Conventions, and to encourage more person-to-person support for migrants here.

Join us on this journey towards 18 December 2012 and into the future!

Go to the OUR DAY website for more details, events you can be part of, and even add a personal touch in showing your support!

And remember to check back here for our own Scottish event as soon as it’s announced!

Our Day: Standing Together for International Migrants Day is a campaign launched by Migrants Rights Network across the UK.
