Emergency meeting: Imminent evictions of vulnerable asylum seekers, 29 March 2012, Glasgow

Date: 29 March 2012

Times: 3.00-5.00pm

Venue: Garnethill Multicultural Association, 21 Rose Street, G3 6RE

Emergency meeting called by several groups, including the Night Shelter project for destitute asylum seekers.

It’s come to our attention that a number of asylum seekers currently in Y-people housing who have been refused status (who a…s you may know due to Y-People’s “no-eviction policy”, have been allowed to stay in accommodation at the end of their asylum claim) are now being issued with letters telling them to leave their accommodation within the next two weeks.

Given the number of people potentially facing eviction (which we estimate to be over 100 at least) and in addition, the number of people staying with friends/family in this situation, we are deeply concerned. Whilst exact information on the status of this has not yet been provided we are certain that those affected will have few – or no – options available to them and are likely to be left completely homeless.

We’d like to call an emergency meeting next week to discuss how we can support each other as there are likely to be massive implications for current providers of support – particularly the Glasgow Destitution Network- i.e. the night shelter, food distribution – and we urgently need to explore how we can mobilize greater support from other avenues.

We’ve booked the Garnethill Multicultural Centre for 3pm on Thursday the 29th. Anyone with concern over this issue is urged to attend where possible. Please let us know if you’re able to attend and please pass on to anyone you feel should be involved.

If you have any questions or ideas on particular issues/actions that need to be raised please contact nicky@unfinishedpictureproject.org.
